about

“The record drives on at a pace not measured in speed but in sound. A beautiful mix of late 60s freak-out, folk calmness and surf rock." -- Aquarium Drunkard

"Their music is exotic and intoxicating, a heady brew of lounge, psychedelia and country, and singer Brooks Nielsen works the stage like a hippie Dean Martin. Wonderfully languid, fluid grooves and hooks that come straight out of left field." -- Goldmine

“The Growlers specialise in a kind of sepia-tinted, battered kind of vintage pop, related to the more quirky end of the Nuggets spectrum – or some of Devendra’s own spikier ramalams… a sweet and reverberant  West Coast correlative to The Coral, of all things.” -- Uncut (UK)

"There's is a shuffling, Captain Beefheart–ish funk and tinny, surfside guitar sound that places the Growlers in the good company of SoCal's best-known and darkly tripped-out musical bastions like Love With Arthur Lee, not to mention the Doors during their groovier blues moments. The Growlers know how to wow a crowd too and [Brooks] Neilsen (voice) and [Matt] Taylor (guitar) know that musical sweet spot well — where meandering, occasionally melancholy guitar work still gets people up dancing."  -- L.A. Weekly

"Garage rock fuzz and distorted voice riding atop a surf-ska emotion that drove it towards making even the tightest legs move..." -- FMLY

"Dark, surf-tinged guitar hooks and near circus-like stage presence. While frontman Brooks Nielsen sashayed freely about, an auxiliary drummer in an oversized coolie hat sat stationary with a small bongo. During more rollicking tracks, the band found themselves flanked by legions of shimmying ladies—the ultimate testament to sonic success." -- Santa Barbara Independent

"The Growlers might have been the strangest bunch of cats that have come through this town in some time. Their music can be best described as surf music played during a holy roller revival that was feeling the effects of a snake bite. Lead singer Brooks Nielsen had the physique of former New York Yankees pitcher David Wells and the grace and sway of a cow trying to wiggle his way up after being tipped over in the mud. " -- Syracuse New Times

'Opening act The Growlers were a good fit for Dr. Dog; a similarly shaggy-dog appeal, but their sound veered more toward a groove-heavy blues-rock, Ventures-style surf guitar drifting underneath the drumbeat. Interesting headgear seemed to be a band requirement, as one band member wore a coonskin cap and the lead singer sported a cowboy hat late in the set." -- Madison State Journal

"When you have a singer like foot-jittering Brooks Nielsen, landing somewhere between Julian Casablancas with a Bobby Darin croon, onstage singing songs about acid rain atop a jangly, hypnotic guitar strum “last night I dreamed it rained, and nobody complained, and when it quit, no one was ever the same…” their really just seems to be nothing wrong with any of it." -- Fuel TV

"The Growlers play party music that's shot through with an undertone of melancholy. It's as if their sepia-tinted rock songs come equipped with both the drunken cheeriness and the nauseating hangover ... one of the most interesting bands working in the region... these songs exude a casual, understated cool, marked by winding, mesmerizing, spangly guitars and Brooks Nielsen's riveting, woebegone vocals. Even 38-second scraps bear close listening." -- OC Weekly

"The Growlers come from where the surf (and the staph) hit the sand and release music like they’re paid by the minute." -- LA Record

"Distorted guitars, reverbed vocals, and homemade recordings that sound like they were made in 1965."  -- Foam

"The Growlers latest release “Are You In or Out?” was somehow magically left off of my best of ‘09 album lists. This Doors-go-surfing band sounds like SoCal. A punk surf psychadelia experience, these guys love sun and drugs and rock n roll and I love them for it. Unapologetically punk rock in their whole persona, they intentionally stray from being too clean around any edge. The Growlers are the highlight of this tour, and are one of the best drug/garage bands around. I almost went baja after their set, which was also cut short, leaving the 5 of us (obviously not students) giving big “fuck yous” to the man." -- Boy With The Boot
